Lyrics

Hurricane Carl

Carl was a Hurricane when Hurricanes were king — the Orange Bowl and Miami’s 1980s dynasty.

Verse 1

Old Orange Bowl still standing, the eighties had just begun,
Carl was there on Saturdays, saw Miami start it’s run.
Season tickets, the Hurricane Club, and alumni-proud,
When the Canes came through the smoke, he got twice as loud.

Verse 2

Howard Schnellenberger came along and changed the game,
Turned a struggling football team into a household name.
Then Bernie Kosar ran the show in nineteen eighty-three,
And one point over Nebraska started the Miami dynasty.

Verse 3

Bernie had the title, Vinny had the crown,
Jerome Brown could hit so hard he'd shake half of the town.
Alonzo Highsmith lowered shoulders, Irvin talked his game,
When teams came to play Miami, they remembered those names.

Verse 4

Jimmy Johnson brought the swagger, hair blowing in the breeze,
Bennie Blades on the blitz brought quarterbacks to their knees.
Steve Walsh found Bratton, Tiger Clark came through,
Twelve-and-ohhhh… beat the Sooners for the title number two.

Chorus

Oh, Carl was a Hurricane when Hurricanes were king,
Orange Bowl was rocking, you could feel the whole place swing.
Bernie, Howard, Jimmy… every Saturday a show,
If you wore that U in Miami, buddy, everybody’d know.

Verse 5

Then Dennis Erickson showed up, kept the engine running hot,
That Miami defense came to hit, and man, they hit a lot.
They beat Alabama in the Sugar, sent another trophy home,
Three titles in the eighties… Miami owned the throne.

Verse 6

Now if Carl tells the story, Canes never lost a game,
Every flag was crooked and the referees were all to blame.
Bring up Florida State and Carl will quickly set you straight:
“The eighties belonged to Miami, son… there ain’t no debate.”

Chorus

Oh, Carl was a Hurricane when Hurricanes were king,
Orange Bowl was rocking, you could feel the whole place swing.
Bernie, Howard, Jimmy… every Saturday a show,
If you wore that U in Miami, buddy, everybody’d know.

Outro

Yeah, Carl was a Hurricane when Hurricanes were king,
Back when Saturday in Miami was a mighty special thing.
Orange on his shirt and Hurricane green down in his soul,
Carl and the Canes in the eighties, yo, that was rock and roll.
